By using the site you accept these Terms; if you do not accept them, please do not use the site.
Changes to these terms
We may revise these Terms from time to time. Updates take effect when they are posted here, and your continued use of the site after a change means you accept the revised Terms.

Section Two
Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how the Society collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you visit the site or interact with our related online services, and the choices you have about that information.
Scope
This Policy covers information collected through the site and through online interactions that point to it — for example, when you contact us, register for an event, subscribe to updates, apply for the fellowship, or submit any other inquiry. It does not cover websites operated by third parties, including chapter partners or organizations linked from the site.
Information we collect
We collect information in three ways: information you provide to us directly, information collected automatically when you use the site, and information from third-party sources.
| Category | Examples | Typical purposes |
|---|---|---|
| Contact & identifiers | Name, email, phone, organization, role, and anything you include in a message or application. | Reply to inquiries, evaluate applications, schedule meetings, communicate about gatherings. |
| Professional context | Industry, organization size, areas of focus, technology priorities you choose to share. | Tailor materials and discussions; match you to relevant chapters or programs. |
| Usage & device | IP address, browser, device identifiers, pages viewed, interaction patterns; approximate location from IP. | Operate the site, improve content, measure engagement, prevent abuse. |
| Cookies & similar | Cookies, pixel tags, local storage that recognize your browser or store preferences. | Remember preferences, enable functionality, analytics, measurement. |
| Third-party sources | Publicly available business information and information from service providers that support the site. | Add context for legitimate business conversations and operate the site. |
You can choose not to provide certain information, but in that case we may not be able to respond to your inquiry or process your request.
How we use information
We use information for legitimate business purposes such as:
- Responding to inquiries, introductions, or consultation requests.
- Reviewing and administering applications for the fellowship, chapters, or other programs.
- Sending you updates about research, gatherings, publications, or other materials you have asked for.
- Operating, maintaining, and securing the site.
- Understanding how the site is used so we can improve it.
- Meeting legal obligations and enforcing our rights and policies.
How we share information
- With service providers who help us run the site and our communications — for example, hosting, analytics, scheduling, and CRM tools.
- With professional advisors, such as legal, accounting, or security advisors, when reasonably needed.
- With chapter leadership or program participants when you request or reasonably expect a connection.
- In connection with a corporate transaction such as a merger, financing, or reorganization, subject to customary protections.
- To comply with law or legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of the Society or others.
We do not sell personal information for money, and we do not knowingly share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Cookies
We and our service providers may use cookies and similar technologies to operate the site, remember your preferences, understand usage, and improve performance. You can control cookies in your browser settings, though some features may not work properly if cookies are disabled.
Email communications
If you contact us or subscribe to updates, we may send you messages related to your interest. You can opt out of non-essential emails using the unsubscribe link in any message or by contacting us.
Data retention
We keep information for as long as is reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy — to provide what you have asked for, maintain business records, resolve disputes, and meet legal requirements. Retention periods vary depending on the type of information and our relationship with you.
Security
We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect information. No system is perfectly secure, so please use caution when sending information through email or other unencrypted channels.
International visitors
We may process and store information in the United States and in other locations where we or our service providers operate. If you access the site from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to and processed in jurisdictions whose data protection laws differ from yours.
Children’s privacy
The site is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, please contact us so we can take appropriate steps.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete certain personal information, and to object to certain processing. To make a request, email privacy@ciofellows.org with the subject “Privacy Request.” We may need to verify your identity first.
California residents
California law gives residents additional rights regarding personal information, including the right to know, delete, and correct certain information, and the right to opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell personal information for monetary consideration. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.
EEA and United Kingdom
If you are located in the EEA or the UK, we process personal information only when we have a lawful basis to do so — for example, your consent, our legitimate interests in operating the site, or steps taken at your request before entering into a relationship. You may have the right to object, request portability, or withdraw consent, and to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
Updates
We may update this Policy from time to time. The effective date at the top of this page indicates when it was last revised.
